Champs Until Dethroned: Are the San Francisco 49ers the Best in the NFC?

Last season, the Baltimore Ravens ended the NFC’s three-game winning streak in the Super Bowl with a 34-31 win over the San Francisco 49ers.

Now Jim Harbaugh’s club hopes to return to the Super Bowl and come out on top this time around.

But are the Niners the best team in their own division, much less the very loaded NFC?

We’ll soon find out. And to help us get started, we’ll take a look at those division champions and the rest of last season’s teams in the NFC that didn’t finish with a losing record…

Champs Until Dethroned: Are the Baltimore Ravens the Best in the AFC?

Check out the latest on Yahoo! Sports Contributor Network

The race to represent your conference in Super Bowl XLVIII will hit the field in less than four months.

That means dethroning the Baltimore Ravens, who are not only defending AFC champions but defending Super Bowl champs as well.

But is John Harbaugh’s club still the team to beat in their own conference?

As for contenders, no one is excluded. But in this instance, we’ll start with the Ravens and look at the rest of last season’s teams in the AFC that didn’t finish with a losing record in 2012…

Peyton Manning’s Place in History?

Check out Yahoo! Sports

Here are a few facts…just in passing.

Only Brett Favre and Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Marino have thrown for more yards in NFL history. And only Favre has totaled more touchdown passes in the league’s 93-year history.

But there’s one number, fair or unfair, that always seems to take center stage when it comes to current Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning.

And that’s 9-11.

In 14 seasons on the field, Manning has thrown for 59,487 yards, topped only by Favre (71,838) and Marino (61,361). And considering the former Indianapolis Colts signal-caller has totaled 4,000 or more yards through the air 12 times, it’s safe to assume (if healthy) he’ll move past Marino in 2013…

Ranking the 12 Best Rivalries in the NFL Today

Check out BleacherReport.com

So do rivalries actually exist in this day and age in the National Football League in which longtime opponents can become teammates in the blink of an eye?

You bet they do.

Face it. The game of football is a little more fun when you realize that both teams and/or a few players really don’t like each other. And the game is made even more interesting when the head coaches are not too fond of one another.

So here’s a look at a dozen rivalries, both team-wise and personal, that pique our interest, with an unusual twist or two along the way. As usual, we’re not afraid to bring up an unorthodox view or two. But lest you worry, there’s plenty of respect paid to tradition here.

From the historic to the current, we’ll touch on storied series and recent events in this piece. In any case, it’s a fun look of one of the aspects of the game that we enjoy so much…

Will It Continue To Be Doomsday For The Cowboys?

Check out Yahoo! Sports Contributor Network

A little modern NFL history lesson and numbers that most football fans are very familiar with.

No team has been to more Super Bowls than the Dallas Cowboys, who’ve made eight appearances in the Big Game–tied with thePittsburgh Steelers for the most ever.

And only Pittsburgh (6) has won more Lombardi Trophies than the Pokes (5, tied with the San Francisco 49ers), who became the first franchise in league annals to win three Super Bowls in a four-year span (1992-95), a feat since duplicated by the New England Patriots(2001-04).

But 1995 is significant, because it not only marks the last time the Cowboys won an NFL title but also the last time we saw the organization even reach the NFC title game. In 1996, Dallas did manage to win their division with a 10-6 mark and beat theMinnesota Vikings in the wild card playoffs before losing to theCarolina Panthers a week later in the divisional round…
