When we last met, we discussed the advantages of NFL teams opening the season 2-0. And now we know that if the number holds up we’ll see, at the very least, the Texans, Chargers, Eagles, Falcons, 49ers or Cardinals at the Superdome in early February. Perhaps even more than one of those clubs; of the 92 participants in the 46 Super Bowls, 65 of them opened 2-0 or better.
But what about the perils of a team opening the season 0-2 or starting 0-3?
As we know, three teams have won the Lombardi Trophy (1993 Cowboys, 2001 Patriots and 2007 Giants) have won a Super Bowl after a 0-2 start. Conversely, only five times has a club gone 0-3 and even reached the playoffs, the latest being the 1998 Buffalo Bills. And of those five, the 1992 Chargers are the lone example of a team to overcome a 0-4 start and make it to the postseason…
