In honor of the 143rd running of the Belmont Stakes, the horses in this year’s field have some NFL connections of sorts. We’ve taken a few liberties here, but curious to know which one of these is your “favorite?”1. Master of Hounds: So obvious I almost missed it. The “Dawg Pound” in Cleveland has been somewhat quiet because their team is a combined 64-128 and made just 1 playoff appearance since returning to the league in 1999…<!--more-->2. Stay Thirsty: That would be the Bills and Lions, who co-own the longest playoff drought in the NFL, neither making a postseason appearance since the same day in 1999…3. Ruler On Ice: It has to be Bart Starr’s game-winning touchdown sneak in the Packers’ 21-17 win in the 1967 NFL Championship Game at frigid Lambeau Field (aka The Ice Bowl)…4. Santiva: Named after a boat that delivered mail, the very-dependable Andy Reid (Eagles) comes through on a weekly basis and is now the league’s longest-tenured head coach…5. Brilliant Speed: You can take your pick from playmakers RB Chris Johnson (Titans) or WR DeSean Jackson (Eagles). Both scare opposing defenses (and punt coverage teams) every time they touch the ball…6. Nehro: The name gives homage to India’s first prime minister, so we’ll pay tribute to “Primetime” CB Deion Sanders, who will take his rightful place in Canton this August...7. Monzon: One of the longshots at 30-1, it would almost be like a 7-9 team making the playoffs, then knocking out the defending Super Bowl champions. Oh, that’s right it happened last year in Seattle…8. Prime Cut: In 1955, the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted QB Johnny Unitas (Louisville) in the 9th round, then released him before the season. He somehow managed to land on his feet…9. Animal Kingdom: For what it’s worth, nearly half of the league’s 32 teams have some sort of connection to this world (Dolphins, Bills, Bengals, Ravens, Colts, Jaguars, Broncos, Eagles, Bears, Lions, Falcons, Panthers, Cardinals, Rams and Seahawks)…10. Mucho Macho Man: When you’ve been 2-time Defensive Player of the Year, a Super Bowl MVP, named to 11 Pro Bowls and led your team in tackles 13-of-15 seasons, it’s hard tothink of still-going-strong MLB Ray Lewis…11. Isn't He Perfect: Hard to not point to Patriots’ QB Tom Brady, especially when you throw 36 touchdown passes and just 4 interceptions last season and haven’t been pickedoff in an NFL-record 335 regular-season attempts (and counting)…12. Shackleford: Apparently the horse is named after islands in the Shackleford Banks off North Carolina, meaning he must be a distant cousin of (Darrelle) Revis Island…
