Week 3 Key Matchups:
Grading The T Rich Deal: At the start of the week, the 49ers were as high as 65% in the Sports Tradex game to beat the Colts. As I write this, SF’s stock has dropped to 60%. The public really likes the Richardson trade for the Colts. T Rich fits the Colts’ scheme beautifully and improves their probability of winning by a whopping 5%. This is just his first week with Indianapolis and his impact should increase as he learns the system better. The 49ers might be without star LB Aldon Smith who is suspected of DUI. If Smith doesn’t play, expect San Francisco’s prediction odds to slide further. Even still, the 49ers will take the field as favorites over Indianapolis.
Offense vs. Defense: Defenses scored a victory in the Thursday night game as the Chiefs contained Chip Kelly’s offense. Sunday’s Packers-Bengals game is another example of great defense versus great offense. In previous years, offenses were able to overcome great defense but this year might be different as coordinators adjust to spread formations, no huddle and the read option. The prediction data from Sports Tradex gives a slight edge to the Bengals who have the fortune of facing the Packers in Cincinnati. The Bengals have not allowed a 300-yard passing game since Brandon Weeden, that’s right Brandon Weeden, did it in Week 2 last year. Aaron Rodgers will test that streak.
